The Japanese book I’m going to read next is 真夜中法律事務所 by 五十嵐律人 (Igarashi Ritsuto), a “ghost legal mystery” as advertised on the cover.

I never read this author before, I saw this book in Kyobo bookstore and found it appealing.

A book in Japanese on a wooden table. The cover displays a painting of three people in a coffeeshop. Two men are sitting at tables and looking towards the right, a woman is sitting at the counter and looking at us.

I finished 真夜中法律事務所 by 五十嵐律人 (Igarashi Ritsuto), and I liked the story. Our protagonist is a prosecutor who sees ghosts and learns that people who have been wronged cannot find peace in the afterworld as long as justice has not been delivered properly. This allows for some very interesting elements in the case.

At the same time… I don’t know, maybe I was not in the right mood, but it was not an exciting read either. Actually, none of the three books I read in Japanese this year are making it to my favourites.

Maybe it’s time to change genre and try something else? (I mean, not crime fiction.)

The book game me a couple of prompts for my reading bingo. I probably have missed some too, but I haven’t miss the mention of the perfect crime! (two mentions in Korean and Japanese so far, and just one in Chinese.) (I’m hiding a character name on the picture to avoid spoiler.)

Close up of the page of a Japanese book. The picture is too zoomed out to read any line entirely, but the word “perfect crime” is in the middle and highlighted in yellow.
A long notebook with a focus on the left page. There’s the title “Perfect Murder” at the top and the page is divided into three sections, each containing some lines of text in different languages. A book in Japanese appears near the notebook, partly out of frame.
