I had 300 reviews to catch up on, and today I’m down to 100.. phew… I can’t do anymore today, but I think I’ll be able to completely catch up this weekend, and then next week I’ll start adding new cards.

And I have a new young streak of three days! :blobcatglowsticks:

My Anki reviews for the first half of the year have been chaotic, but I can explain! First I broke my elbow and didn’t feel like doing Anki, then I kind of got back on track, but motivation kept going up and down. Then I was sick last week, and dropped Anki again.

I did study today though! I have 300 cards to review and went through 100 of them which is not bad. I’ll try to catch up this week, and hopefully it’ll be the beginning of a new streak!

A calendar for the year 2025 shows a visual representation of completed days with blue squares. There are several holes in the calendar with handwritten notes explaining reasons for not completing the task during the “hole” periods.

I finally caught up with Anki! It took me a week to go through all the 700+ reviews that had piled up during my month of inactivity.

Two things that helped me were 1- add a lot of hints on cards (like for example, this card for “fish and chips”.). It’s mostly to clarify characters that have different pronunciations or different meanings. And because I love customising Anki, I chose a ghost icon from the Font Awesome library as hint button.

2- I had TTS autoplaying on reveal, but I changed it to autoplay on the front. It’s a bit cheating, because it does give the pronunciation, but to be fair, I don’t always get the tone right anyway. It was a pain to make it so that Anki does not autoplay on the back as well.

And now I’m also working on changing the colours, to mark a fresh start! I’m so glad I didn’t give up on this deck!! :frog_celebrate:

I don’t know why bold weight works so badly with Chinese characters, to the point where complex ones can become hardly readable... I realised recently that I needed to use another font rather than change the font weight of the words I’m studying.

Here is an example of an Anki card with highlighted words in bold (using font-weight: bold in css) VS using a bold font (in this case, Google Font Noto Sans Simplified Chinese bold).

A sentence in Chinese with highlighted words in red. The font is bold, but some strokes are so thick, the character becomes harder to read and it gives an overall messy impression.
Same sentence as previous picture, but the highlighted words are now in a much regular shape, are easy to read while still being in bold.

I added Xiao and Hu Tao to my Anki cards!

Normal cards have Xiao, and leech cards (the ones I keep forgetting) have Hu Tao (they’re automatically marked with the leech tag). I like how Xiao looks bored (I basically have the exact same expression when I’m doing Anki), while Hu Tao is like “Alright, let’s review this card!”

I might get bored of it later and change it (at this point, customising Anki has become a hobby in itself), but for now, I’m really happy with how the cards look like!

I just saw this table in Anki. I don’t know if it’s new or if I just never paid attention to it before…
Anyway it’s interesting! So yesterday I failed 3 of the 4 mature cards I was shown…
And I have a better retention rate on young cards than mature cards. hum, shouldn’t it be the reverse? :meow_distrust:
Overall, around 80% of retention sounds okay to me, meaning I do remember most of the words I learn. :blobhappy:
