I played through Linnea SQ, and I tried to only rely on the audio and not look at the text.

Usually I always read what’s in the text box while listening because I trust my reading more than my listening level, but this time I had the rule to not read the subtitles at all, and I understood everything quite well!

佩 pèi: ornament worn as a pendant at the waist

This is the first word I learnt while playing Where Winds Meet (because you write your name on a jade pendant 玉佩 at the beginning), and now I saw it in Lan Yan’s demo song title: 环佩琳琅.

Sometimes I wonder if learning character combat voicelines is that useful, but I saw the word 歼灭 (jiānmiè: annihilate, wipe out, destroy) in a novel, and it’s a word I know because, when Ineffa casts her burst, she says 歼灭模式 “annihilation mode”.

So it’s useful after all!

In reply to @blue

Oh, this word, 休想 (xiūxiǎng: don’t think that sth is possible/you can…, don’t even dream about doing…), I know it from Xiao’s idle:

荒野上的孤魂,休想伤我分毫。

(I love this voiceline so much :meow_heart3: )

There are some words that, when I see them, I can immediately say where I saw/learnt them for the first time.

I want to get into Wuxia fiction, but reading wuxia novels in Chinese feels daunting, so I thought I’d start with a game, thinking it’d be easier. I tried Where Winds Meet, and this game is incredible!

But it’s really hard to play in Chinese, there’s so many menus and things to do, so I’m making a glossary of terms like region names, martial arts and inner ways, name of quests and collectibles, etc.

Most of the time I don’t know what I’m doing, but the game is stunning :meow_wow: :meow_controller:

Notebook opened filled with notes about a wuxia game: there are the names of game regions and a list of quests to do. The name of quests is in Chinese with pinyin and English translation. The right part of the page is reserved for vocabulary.

While doing Anki today, I realised I was mixing up two characters, 惶 and 慌, because their meaning and pronunciations are close. No wonder I couldn’t remember the correct tone for any of them.

I use a hint field in Anki for this kind of situation, it’s the best way for me to finally get them right… and I post it here to make it stick even more.

Screenshot of a field in a flashcard editing interface. The field is called “Hint” and this is what is inside: “慌 is different from 惶.
慌 huāng: be in a state of panic: 慌忙,慌不择路. 惶 huáng: filled with fear, scared: 惶恐.“

I always tend to mix up words that I learn at the same time if they have similar pronunciations.

It happened before with 遭逢 zāoféng (meet with, come across) and 交锋 jiāofēng (clash, confront). Pronunciation is not even that similar, but I’m having such a hard time with those two!

And now the same happens with 心虚 xīnxū (be afraid of being found out) and 心绪 xīnxù (state of mind).

The problem is that once I start mixing them up, it gets worse and worse. The only way is to use hints in Anki.

Screenshot showing the Chinese word 心虚 on the top left, then a line crossing the whole picture. Underneath is an otter icon, and below the icon there is written: 心虚 ≠ 心绪.

My fortune for the day at Nasha Town was: 海蛇翻腾,风暴肆虐

海蛇 hǎishé: sea snake
翻腾 fānteng: roil, thrash, churn
风暴 fēngbào: storm
肆虐 sìnüè: wreak havoc, devastate

The sea serpent thrashes, the storm wreaks havoc. In other words, no matter what I do I will run into obstacles… 😱 I have so many things to do today, what am I going to do??

I’ve been adding new words to Anki today and learnt the Chinese word for master key.

I crafted it for Aino. Maybe the previous event claymore is better (?), but I prefer this one in terms of aesthetics.

That’s the only Nod-Krai weapon I crafted for now, but I might craft the polearm for Flins, because the funds for his signature have been used for Lauma :blobcatgiggle:

I finally finished the Yelan event, it took me almost a week lol. It was very difficult in Chinese, like there was at least one if not several unknown words in every single sentence! :blob_fearful:

I’d say I’m doing pretty well now playing the game in Chinese, I usually don’t need to pause or look up words, but this event was so hard for some reason :blobSmileTear:

I’m playing the AC collab story with English text and Chinese voice-over, and I’m picking up some new words like 刺客 cìkè: assassin. Not surprisingly, it’s a recurring word.

I knew that “assassination” is 暗杀 ànshā (암살 in Korean, like the movie), but I didn’t know the word 刺客.

Also pulled P5 Ezio! Took me 220 pulls which (I believe) is exactly the estimate for full constellations with average luck.
First full cons character ever!

I was thinking of starting a new farm in Stardew Valley, mainly so I could play in Chinese, but… why is the font so small? I couldn’t find an option to change it (I’m on the mobile version).

I can read it, but it’s just too tiring. Dialogues are fine, but there’s too much text written too small, and it feels discouraging.

Since I can’t play in Chinese, I might as well just drop the idea of starting a new farm, but the thing is that I already have two chickens 🐓 (I chose the Meadowlands Farm), and I can’t just abandon them now. It’s also interesting to play in English since my first and only farm was me playing in Japanese, so everything feels a bit different :meow_controller:

My favourite thing at the moment is listening to Taiwanese podcasts on mooSound. There’s a lot of podcasts about books, and there’s even one specialised on mystery fiction, but unfortunately it’s not the easiest one to understand.

My go-to for now is 下一本讀什麼 hosted by 瓦基, it’s mostly about self-improvement. Not my favourite topic, but still interesting and motivating. Most importantly though, I can understand it very well!!! :frog_celebrate:
