殺人是件嚴肅的事 was the third book I finished for the 2026 Readmoo reading challenge. Three books in three months, if I keep up this pace, I’ll be able to reach the 10 books badge :blob_aww:

Screenshot showing a card with 15 slots to fill in order to complete a challenge. Slots 5, 10 and 15 give special badges. Only the first three slots are filled with a stamp (a cute cow in a bowl filled with grapes and wheat).

I’m starting 十戒 by 夕木春央 (Yūki Haruo), I loved the author’s other novel 方舟, so I decided to give this one a try.

I have a prompt for stories that take place on islands, because it’s the perfect setting for closed circle mysteries, but I hadn’t found any island setting yet. It turns out that “island” is the very first word of 十戒, so I have my first entry for this prompt! :blobbook: :blob_smiley:

An opened book and opened notebook side by side. On the left of the picture, the right page of a Japanese novel is visible, the chapter is “prologue” and the first sentence starts with “island”. On the right of the picture, there’s the left page of a grid notebook with the title “Island” and the first sentence of the book has been handwritten with the word “island” in orange.

개구리 정원의 살인 gave me a lot of mentions for my bingo reading challenge, but no new entry. Mention of the perfect crime, mention of AI, poisoning… I already had all these for Korean.

One prompt I thought would be hard to fill is De mortuis nil nisi bonum for when characters questioned by the police about the victim start by saying “I know you don’t speak ill of the dead, but…” and then do it anyway. I already found three examples of that!

I’m having a lot of fun with this reading challenge :ablobcatenjoy: I’m probably missing prompts when I’m too focused on the story and forget that I have this challenge going on lol, but it’s fine.

As 2026 is the year of the Fire Horse, “horse” and “fire” are my first prompts. I found several mentions of fire, but no horse so far.

Opened grid notebook with the focus on the bottom of the left page. The top of the page is blurred, but the title “perfect murder” is visible. The page is divided into three sections, each containing text. The bottom one has two sentences in Korean, both containing the word “완전범죄” that is written in blue.

I still have a lot of doodles to do for my Korean food reading journal, I’m trying to do one per day to catch up.

For this one, I didn’t feel like drawing all the food mentioned :meow_nervoussweat: (the characters order the “tuna special”, a full course that comes with a lot of different side dishes in addition to the tuna sashimi platter), so I searched for tuna restaurants with interesting signboards and doodled that instead.

The top part of the left page of a notebook. The very top is filled with doodles: two signboards in Korean with the word “tuna” on it. One has the word 연 written in the shape of a fish: ㅇ is the eye, ㅕ the body with fish bones and ㄴ the ventral fin. A fish is also drawn between the two signboards. Below the drawings there is some text in Korean that mentions a lot of fish-related food. The name of each dish is written in blue.

I just saw that I got my first stamp from finishing 異人山 by 高雲章 last weekend!

It’s the first time I’m doing an online reading challenge, it’s very motivating :blob_smiley:

A board showing progression for reading books, there are 15 slots with the 5th, 10th and 15th being badges. All the slots are empty except the first one that has a stamp on it (a cow in a bowl full of grapes).

Third bingo!!
This one is for when characters hear footsteps.
(I need to find a prompt in novels in each of the three languages I’m learning.)

An opened, long and thin grid agenda. The right page has the title “footsteps” and is divided into three sections, each filled with a quote in Chinese for the top section, Japanese for the middle one, and Korean for the bottom one.

Crime fiction topics

Second bingo!!
Still in the series of “ways to commit murder in crime fiction”. First bingo was poisoning, and now we have stabbing :blobcatknife:

Long grid agenda opened with a focus on the left page. There’s a title “stabbing” at the top, and the page is divided in three sections with a quote in each one: top section is written in Chinese, middle Japanese and bottom Korean.

I finished the short story 천사는 마로니에 공원에서 죽는다 by 김아직, a murder story set in the Marronnier Park at Daehangno. It’s funny because I’ve been there several times, and I had no idea it was called “Marronnier Park”.

I’ve been taking notes for my Korean food reading challenge, and there were so many mentions of food in this short story!
Ramyeon, brioche, ox bone soup (설렁탕), grilled chicken on skewer (닭꼬치), fried chicken (닭튀김), sandwiches…
Fictional characters really do eat a lot in Korean novels :blobcatgiggle: :meowHungry:

I’m doing it, a Korean food reading challenge! I’ll write down all mentions of food/dishes I find in Korean novels to see which one is the most popular :meow_read: :meowHungry:

I’m thinking of doing a page per food, and fill it with the title of the book and the sentence that mentions it.

+ I’m adding small doodles for each dish. Starting with ramyeon (it’s the first mention I saw, followed by burger lol), I’ll add colours later.

Top left part of a page with a doodle of an instant noodle packaging from a Korean brand.

I’m reading 異人山 (不歸之人) by 高雲章, and it’s so great so far (I’m at 25%) :neocat_heart:
The setting is a remote mountain village, and the plot is very intriguing. I also love our two protagonists!

This book is part of the 2026 Readmoo reading challenge, and I just saw that if you’re reading a book from the challenge, it appears on your homepage. (To be honest, I rarely go on this page, but it’s a nice feature!)

Screenshot showing a book cover with a progression bar (at about 25%). Above the cover, a text in Traditional Chinese says “2026 reading challenge”.

Crime fiction stuff, related to murder

First bingo!!! :yay:

I have a total of 38 prompts, including different ways to commit murder, things you usually see in crime novels like strangulation, stabbing, etc. And I completed the poison prompt! One in each language (Chinese, Japanese and Korean)!!

Given that I got a bingo in January, it confirms that I made this reading challenge way too easy. Let’s see if I can get a super bingo for this one (= 3 mentions in each language).

A long and thin grid notebook opened with the focus on the right page. The title “poisoning “ is written on top and the page is divided into three sections. There’s a sentence written in each section. (Top section in Chinese, middle Japanese and bottom Korean).

There’s a 2026 reading challenge on Readmoo, you have to select 15 books among a selection (it’s actually 5 book in each of 3 categories) and you have the year to read them. You get a badge when you read 5, 10 and 15 books from your list.

I don’t usually do online reading challenges, but I started browsing through the selection, and there were several books in there that I wanted to read anyway, and a lot of other ones that looked great, so and I ended up joining the challenge :blob_smile_happy:

Another fun reading challenge I thought I could do is to write down all the dishes that I saw mentioned in Korean novels this year, and then see which one is more popular (I bet it would be either 컵라면 or 짜장면).

I have a reading bingo for 2026 where I need to find a prompt in each of my target languages. (Linking to the original challenge that I got inspiration from, but I ended up changing a lot of prompts). I just write down the title of the book, and the sentence where it appeared with a colour per language.

One is for “mention of a famous fictional detective”, and the Korean short story I read yesterday mentioned Sherlock Holmes (it’s always Sherlock Holmes…). So I’m close to a bingo here!
The only other one that has two entries already is “serial killer”.

I made this bingo way too easy by choosing tropes of crime fiction, when I mostly only read crime fiction :silly:

But there’s enough space for three entries per language, so I decided that I’ll get a super bingo if I can fill three entries per language for a prompt ✨

A long and thin grid notebook opened: The pages have three lines making three sections. The title on the left page is “fictional detective”. The second and third sections have notes in Japanese and Korean respectively with a word highlighted.
